About the piano curriculum at Miss Jane’s Music:

Miss Jane’s curriculum allows for flexibility. New songs are introduced every week. Although all students are encouraged to learn each song, it it not necessary to master EVERY piece to progress. There may be a piece that is not a personal favorite, but then they get excited by the next one and the progress continues. Pieces are scaffolded so that as new concepts are introduced, challenges arise, but then the level of difficulty may ease back on the next selection, thus allowing for faster and greater success.

Traditional Piano Teaching (private lessons) vs. Miss Jane’s Music Group Piano Classes

Traditional Piano

-Students sit on the piano bench for 30-60 minutes
-Method books offer mostly unfamiliar pieces
-Students work on a piece until it is mastered
-Solo playing can lead to problems with steady beat
-Tuition can be $240 – 350 per month

Miss Jane’s Music

-Students alternate between singing, moving, playing percussion instruments and playing piano
-Pieces are taken from the rich American folk song collection that many students have been hearing since infancy
-New songs are introduced every week to keep the music fresh, mastery of EVERY piece is not required and does not impede forward progress
-Playing together helps students feel the internal pulse of the music
-Tuition averages $100-150 per month

What beginning piano students learn in group:

  • How to sing in Solfege and read notes using the “moveable do” method
  • The Gordon rhythm syllable system. Both Gordon and solfege begin with an aural approach, ear before eye, a similar approach to how language is learned
  • How to play and read familiar 5 finger melodies with a chord accompaniment, thus using both hands almost immediately
  • How to play and transpose to several different hand positions, both major and minor
  • How to play individually and in ensemble
  • How to notate five finger melodies and simple chords

Although Miss Jane’s Music strives to serve as many willing children as possible, we may not be a good fit for everyone. Please alert us to any learning issues that are diagnosed so that we may best serve the student. Students will be expected to make appropriate behavioral choices and may be asked to leave if behavior affects the class progress.

Teaching the Language of Music

To be fluent in a language, one must not only be able to read and write, but think in that language.  At Miss Jane’s Music Studio, we are teaching children to think in the language of music.  Thus when children read music at the appropriate age they are not “translating” note by note but come to a full understanding and can express the music as a whole.

How do we teach musical literacy? As with language, the child is surrounded by from the earliest of ages.

HEARING leads to SPEAKING which leads to READING

HEARING:  From infancy, we are surrounding the child with music in varying styles, meters and modalities.   Music stimulates the brain and encourages movement.  Babbling turns into rhythm patterns.  Cooing turns into singing.  The ear is the central organ in all music-making.

SPEAKING:  Children are taught the syllables of Moveable Do (tonal) and Gordon Rhythm Language (rhythm).  Children can discern and find these patterns in songs just by hearing them.  If a child can sing a musical phrase correctly, they will be successful in reading and performing that phrase on an instrument.

READING: Think of the notes as letters, words as patterns and sentences as musical phrases.  We lead children to an understanding of the whole (musical phrase or sentence) by working first with patterns (words).

For more information on the pathway to musical literacy, click here: The Path to Musical Literacy

Music and Movement Benefits

Music’s melodic and rhythmic patterns awaken and stimulate neural pathways in the brain that help develop memory, math skills, and powers of abstract and creative thinking.

Music touches all spheres of development, including language, self-expression, concentration, social interaction, fine motor skills, listening, problem-solving, teamwork. goal-setting, coordination, confidence, self-esteem, music-playing, creativity, family involvement, poise, bonding, voice expression, family interaction, and emotional developoment.

Overall, music activities are ideal for your growing child.

  • Music immerses the child in language
  • Evokes movement
  • Stimulates the brain
  • Fosters physical coordination
  • Develops listening skills, the foremost necessity for learning

All in a group setting that builds community.
